What is 5-Axis CNC Machining?
Simply put, 5-axis machining means you can bring the cutting tool in from any direction to do its job. Think of it this way: on top of controlling the tool back and forth (X-axis), side to side (Y-axis), and up and down (Z-axis), we also give the machine the ability to rotate either the workpiece or the spindle head itself (A, B, or C axes) just like your wrist.
The real beauty of this is what we call “single setup” or “done-in-one” manufacturing. On a conventional 3-axis machine, if you have a complex part, you often have to unbolt it, flip it, and refixture it multiple times to reach all the features. Every single one of those setups introduces potential errors and eats up hours of cycle time.
If you need to make high-precision, complex parts—like a blisk for a jet engine, a turbine blade, or a medical implant—this is currently the most efficient way to do it.
What 5-Axis Actually Gets You
Let’s be real. Most parts don’t need 5-axis. But when they do, you know it.
You're dealing with
- Undercuts that standard tools can't reach
- Compound angles that require weird fixtures
- Curved surfaces that need to look right and fit right
- Thin walls that love to chatter and warp
What we do about it
- Tilt the tool instead of re-fixturing the part
- Keep the cutter short and rigid (better surface finish, longer tool life)
- Machine in one setup (tolerances stack up? No they don't)

What Our Clients Say
5-Axis CNC Machining FAQs
A: If your part has features on multiple sides that need to align precisely. If it has compound angles. If you’re currently doing 4+ setups on a 3-axis and fighting tolerance stack. Upload the model and I’ll tell you honestly.
A: Yes. We do prototypes all day. Run 1, test it, then run 100 when it’s right.
A: STEP, IGES, SolidWorks, etc.
A: Standard is 7 business days from approval. Rush is 3-4 days (add 30%). If you need it tomorrow, we can’t help you—but we’ll tell you that up front.
A: Yes. No problem.
